Out of doubt, out of dark to the day's rising
I came singing in the sun, sword unsheathing.
To hope's end I rode and to heart's breaking:
Now for wrath, now for ruin and a red nightfall!

It is near the end of the Third Age of Middle Earth. A hobbit named Bilbo Baggins discovered the ring of power in Gollum's cave. Bilbo then left the Shire and the ring in the hands of his nephew Frodo Baggins. Frodo was then forced to leave the shire with three hobbit companions, and they fled to the elven city of Rivendell. There was a great council summoned by the lord Elrond, where it was decided that nine companions would set out on a quest to destroy the ring of power. They were Frodo Baggins, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, Gandalf, Boromir, Samwise Gamgee, Merriadoc Brandybuck, and Peregrin Took. They were then known as the fellowship of the ring. They journeyed far and lost Gandalf in the mines of Moria. They reached Lothlorien and found brief sanctuary there before they were forced to continue their journey. They stopped in Amon Hen, where two of the hobbits were taken by uruk'hai, and Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli chose to follow them after being unable to find Frodo, Sam, or Boromir. The two missing hobbits had decided to cross the river and continue their journey to Mordor without the fellowship. But no one knew what had become of Boromir. Merry and Pippin were saved and kept in the care of the ents, while Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli met Gandalf once more and went to aid the people of Rohan. Frodo and Sam met the creature Gollum, and continued their journey to Mordor, with a brief hitch when Faramir intended to bring them to his father, the Steward of Gondor. At this moment, Frodo, Sam, and Gollum are on their way through the Morgul Vale. The rest of the fellowship finally meet once again at the entrance of Isengard. Our plot sets out from the point where Gandalf and Pippin have arrived in Minas Tirith, and the rest of the fellowship ride with the Rohirrim. From this point on, the plot is up for grabs. From this point on the plot is AU, so anything can really happen. Join Where the Shadows Lie in expanding the plot and delving deeper into the canon characters and coming up with completely new ideas.
